WHAT IS GEAR HOBBING CUTTER?

Hob is a gear cutting tool with teeth arranged in a helical line along a cylinder or cone. Used for processing cylindrical gears, worm gears and other cylindrical workpieces with teeth according to the spreading method (Gear Processing). According to the different uses, hob is divided into gear hob, worm gear hob, non-involute spreading hob and fixed hob and so on.
The process of machining external meshing straight and helical cylindrical gears involves the use of commonly used tools. The hob, which is equivalent to a helical gear with a large helix angle, is used during the machining process. The number of teeth on the hob corresponds to the number of heads, and the workpiece is equivalent to another helical gear. The two gears mesh in space with a fixed speed ratio rotation. The gear tooth shape is formed by sequentially cutting the adjacent position of the knife teeth into the teeth envelope. This process requires a high level of precision and expertise, which our team possesses with confidence. Single-headed hobs are the most commonly used type, as indicated in the thread. However, in mass production, multi-headed hobs are frequently utilized to enhance efficiency.

GEAR HOB CUTTER OPERATING PRINCIPLE

When the hob turns, the gear turns one tooth around its own axis; when the multi-headed hob turns, the number of teeth turned by the gear is equal to the number of heads of the hob. Carbide hobs are also used to machine hardened gears (hardness HRC 50-62). These hobs are often of single tooth welded construction with a 30° negative rake angle, which shaves off a layer of the tooth surface during cutting.

HOW TO CHANGE A GEAR HOB CUTTER?

If you have a tool and cutter grinder that holds the arbor from the hobbing machine, simply remove the cutter arbor mandrel with the hob, sharpen the hob, recover the mandrel and continue hobbing (more or less). However, in many cases of making individual gears, you will need to change the hob.
Imagine you have recently replaced your rough-cut gear hob with a newly sharpened one. The challenge now is to align the new hob to zero and synchronize it with the gear you are producing.
 
To begin, it cannot be assumed that the diameter of the rough cutting hob and the finishing hob are the same, as their diameters can differ by as much as 1/8 of an inch. Therefore, the outside diameter of the hob must be reset to match the outside diameter of the gear. This can be achieved by aligning the hob tooth tip with the gear tooth tip.

To align the hob tooth tip with the gear tooth tip, the table (gear) must be movable to a position independent of the hob's indexing position. In other words, the table must be rotatable without being moved. Rotate the table (gear) until the hob teeth align with the tool tip to the number of gear teeth.

GEAR HOB CUTTER PRODUCTION PROCESS

Gears are cut using the hobbing process, which involves the simultaneous rotation of a gear blank and a tool (called a hob) at a fixed gear ratio. In this method, the gear blank is fed into the rotating hob until the desired depth is reached. The hob passes through the surface of the blank before all the teeth are formed.

For spur gear hobbing, the hob teeth are set parallel to the axis of rotation of the blank. For helical gears, the axis of the hob is set at an angle to produce the correct helix. For worm gears, the axis of the hob is set at right angles to the blank.

  • What is a gear hob?

    A hob is a gear cutting tool whose teeth are arranged in a spiral along a cylinder or cone. Used for machining cylindrical gears, worm gears and other cylindrical workpieces with teeth (gear machining) according to the spread tooth method.
  • What is the difference between milling teeth and hobbing teeth?

    Hobbing is a process of gradually producing gear teeth using a helical cutting tool called a hob. The hob and workpiece are continuously rotated and machined as the hob feeds across the face width of the gear blank.
    This process allows for the production of different tooth pitches. Gear milling, on the other hand, uses a rotating multi-point cutting tool with a cross-section comparable to the teeth being produced. It is also capable of producing different tooth pitches. After each cut, the gear returns to its original position, and the gear blank is indexed for the next cut.
  • Is there a difference between gear insertion and hobbing?

    The forming process uses the reciprocating motion of the cutting head. Some molding processes cut only one tooth at a time, while others use a multi-point array of cutting tools to rotate the blade and make multiple cuts to the teeth simultaneously. It is used for cutting external spur gears and worm gears, etc., and can also be used to replace internal gear teeth. Multiple gear shapers can be combined into a complete hob.
    During the hobbing process, the teeth are cut one by one using interpolation until the machining is complete. Alternatively, the hob cuts all the teeth at the same time, saving time while maintaining accuracy. This method is highly accurate but takes a long time.
